Inside Heart House: A Day in the Life of Job Counseling and Skill Assessment
At Heart House Inc., we know that stable employment is one of the strongest foundations for long-term independence. While our Heart House shelter provides immediate safety and emergency housing in Aurora, IN, meaningful work helps individuals and families rebuild confidence, strengthen financial security, and create lasting change.
It Starts with Listening
Every resident’s journey begins with a conversation. When someone meets with our job counselors, the goal isn’t just to review a résumé—it’s to understand the whole person. Counselors explore past work experience, current skills, career goals, and challenges that may have made employment difficult. Whether someone has faced housing insecurity, is reentering the workforce, or has experienced months of job-search discouragement, our team provides a safe, judgment-free space to be heard and supported.
Before we build a résumé, we build trust.
Discovering Strengths
Through skill assessments, residents uncover the transferable strengths they already possess—communication, organization, leadership, problem-solving, and more. Everyday tasks like managing a family schedule or organizing appointments translate into valuable professional abilities. For individuals staying in our transitional housing for families or supportive housing programs, this step often becomes a turning point in rebuilding confidence.
When residents recognize their own capabilities, doors begin to open.
Preparing for Success
Our counselors help residents create résumés, tailor job applications, and practice interviewing through mock sessions designed to build confidence. We also help residents navigate practical barriers such as childcare, transportation, budgeting, and training opportunities. These services complement our broader programs—including life skills training, job counseling and skills assessment, budgeting and money management classes, and mental-health and peer support—ensuring long-term stability.
More Than a Job
The first wins are often small—a returned call, a scheduled interview, a first paycheck—but each step marks progress. Employment is more than income; it’s routine, purpose, independence, and hope.
At Heart House Inc., job counseling isn’t just about finding work. It’s about walking alongside individuals as they rediscover their strengths and build a path toward stability. Through our homeless shelter in Indiana, temporary housing, and community support services, we help individuals and families move from crisis to confidence—one opportunity at a time.
Together, our community is creating pathways to long-term success for men, women, and families experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. And with continued support, the future looks brighter for every resident who walks through our doors.
