Spring Cleaning for a Cause: Items You Can Donate to Help Local Families

Spring is a season of fresh starts, and at Heart House Inc., we see it as a powerful opportunity for community members to make a meaningful impact. As you clean out closets, organize your home, and refresh your space, your gently used or new items can bring comfort and stability to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.

For the men, women, and families we serve through our Heart House shelter, emergency housing in Aurora, IN, and transitional housing programs, everyday household items are more than objects—they are stepping stones toward dignity, confidence, and long-term independence.

Why Donations Matter

As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) dedicated to providing supportive housing, crisis intervention shelter, and community support services, Heart House relies on community generosity to meet essential needs. Donations help us create safe, welcoming spaces where families can rebuild their lives.

When you donate, you're not just clearing clutter—you’re helping someone feel seen, supported, and valued during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

Clothing and Shoes

Clothing is always in high demand at our homeless shelter in Indiana. Your donations support residents who may have arrived with very few belongings.

Helpful items include:

  • Shirts, pants, jackets, and sweaters
  • Shoes for adults and children
  • Seasonal clothing for changing weather
  • Children’s clothing (always urgently needed)

Please ensure items are clean and gently used—small steps like pairing shoes or folding items neatly make the process easier for our team and more dignified for the families receiving them.

Bedding and Linens

A warm, comfortable place to sleep is essential for healing and stability. We welcome donations of:

  • Blankets and comforters
  • Sheets and pillowcases
  • Towels and washcloths

These simple items help transform temporary shelter into a home-like environment for residents transitioning to stability.

Household Essentials

When families move from temporary shelter into more stable housing, they often start with very little. These household items can make a huge difference:

  • Dishes, cups, and utensils
  • Cookware and kitchen tools
  • Storage containers
  • Cleaning supplies and paper products

Supporting families as they rebuild their homes is one of the most impactful ways to strengthen our community.

Personal Care Items

Hygiene items are among the most requested donations at Heart House. These essentials help individuals maintain dignity and support better health.

We gladly accept new:

  • Soap, shampoo, and conditioner
  • Toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • Deodorant
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Travel-size toiletries

These everyday items are small gifts that create big relief.

Children’s Items and Toys

Many families staying in our supportive housing or transitional housing for families have young children who benefit from comfort, routine, and joy during uncertain times.

Helpful donations include:

  • Books, puzzles, and educational toys
  • Stuffed animals
  • Games and craft supplies
  • School supplies and backpacks

These items help children feel safe, engaged, and hopeful as their families work toward long-term stability.

How Your Donations Make a Difference

Every donation strengthens our mission at Heart House Inc.—to provide affordable housing solutions, homelessness prevention programs, and compassionate support for individuals and families facing crisis.

Your generosity helps us offer:

  • Stable housing for men, women, and families
  • Life skills training and job counseling
  • Budgeting and money management classes
  • Nutrition and cooking education
  • Peer counseling and mental-health support

These programs work together to help residents build confidence, independence, and lasting success.

A Simple Way to Give Back

You don’t need to make a large financial contribution to create meaningful change. Donating items you already have is a simple, powerful way to help neighbors in need.

This spring, as you clear out closets and refresh your space, consider setting aside items that could support someone starting a new chapter. Together, we can turn spring cleaning into an opportunity for compassion, connection, and community impact.

When we give what we can, we help build brighter futures for the families we serve.
